SUMMARY:Alex Cook Art Opening
DESCRIPTION:Alex Cook is a public artist who had created over 220 murals in 20 states around the US and 4 countries. (www.stonebalancer.com) As creator of the YOU ARE LOVED Mural Project he works with organizations of all types including schools\, prisons\, shelters\, and government organizations. These collaborations create love-focused murals (like the one downstairs at Common Street Spiritual Center!) that bring together the power of art and community to support a warmer\, more loving society. (www.youarelovedmurals.com) \nAlex will speak about his nation-wide work with the YOU ARE LOVED Project as well as show pictures of the process. Beyond the paintng process Alex will share how bringing this message of love to all kinds of locations has created conversations and even saved lives. On exhibit in the sanctuary are 10 of Alex’s newest works. He will discuss how creating YOU ARE LOVED murals opened the door to creating new work\, revolutionizing his creative process. \nARTIST STATEMENT: \nFor most of my 30 years of art making my inclination has been to make representational art – pictures of things to tell a story or express a feeling.\nThe 10 works currently on display in the sanctuary represent a departure from that style. Having spent the last several years working on YOU ARE\nLOVED murals whose content is only the lines\, colors\, and contrasts of words and letters\, I have found myself much more interested in how to make\nsoulful\, heartfelt work that uses only formal elements – line\, color\, and contrast – to create beauty. \nThe earliest of these works (on the right wall) were created improvisationally. I created patterns of color on the individual papers and\nthen arranged them to create the larger final piece. Later I realized I could arrange the papers first and then\, still using the geometric patterns on each\npaper\, make a single image that would unify the piece. I began simply with the green and red rings and quickly moved to more complex images like the Floating Man. \nIn these 10 works you can see the development of my thinking from the earlier purely geometrical pieces on the right to the pieces on the left which\neach contain an image created by or event through the geometrical patterns.\nEnjoy!\nAlex Cook\, May 2023 \nAlex Cook is a public artist who had created over 220 murals in 20 statesaround the US and 4 countries. Witness scenes from the dramatic epic Ramayana\, complete with scenes of battles\, trickery\, and the natural world\, performed by masters of Tholpavakoothu\, a traditional form of shadow puppetry from Kerala\, India.\n\nSign up for this FREE event here. https://www.eventbrite.com/…/tholpavakoothu-shadow…\n\nHandmade puppets will be for sale in the lobby for the duration of the event!\n4:00 – 4:30 pm – Registration\n4:30 – 5:00 pm – Try a puppet and visit with the performers behind the scenes.\n5:00 – 6:15 pm – Introduction\, Ramayana performance\, and Q&A with artists.\n\nThis event is provided at no charge\, thanks to a grant from the Stuart Foundation.\n\nKnow the Artists\nRahul Koonathara – is the younger son of legendary shadow puppet master Padmashri Ramachandra Pulavar and Rajalakshmi\, born to a traditional lineage of puppet practitioners preserving the temple traditional art form tholpavakoothu for the past 12 generations.\nPresently\, he is a graduate student at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies under the guidance of Professor Matthew Isaac Cohen.\n\nRahul has completed his bachelors degree in Physics and Masters degree in Folklore studies and specialized acting degree from National School of Drama\, Bangalore.\n\nRahul has led major roles in traditional and contemporary shadow puppetry productions in the theatre company Tholpavakoothu & Puppet Centre in national and International festivals across the globe.\n\nAnthony Sellito Budney – is an educational and puppet expert at Ballard Institute Museum of Puppetry. He has graduated from the University of Connecticut puppet arts program.\n\nGokul Krishnan – is a graduate student at Electrical Engineering department at the University of Connecticut. He is pursuing research in Shadow puppetry and Machine learning.

SUMMARY:Work of Love: Common Threads Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome Amy Adams\, artist and facilitator\, for this dynamic workshop experience.\nMOO is an acronym that describes a methodology for human connection. The acronym is explained in the session.\nThis experience is a journey into a pathway that assists how we engage in complex conversations and scenarios. This pathway of conversation is a key component to addressing circumstances and scenarios\, both unexpected and intentional.\nAttendees will then help create the start for the symbolic Common Threads driven installation\, that will be revealed in the coming weeks.\nParticipants will exit the journey with a usable platform that will serve as an effective foundation for understanding\, atonement\, healing and community building.\nFREE and open to the public.
